I am inclined to reverse this statement andsay you cannot expect tourists, who visita country for pleasure, to come to a placewhere comforts such as tourists requirenowadays are lacking. Provide sufficientconveniences (after the plan of the Swissmountain hotels) and decent means ofcommunication, advertise the fact, and hewill come. Larnaka. we got up the following morning we saw acloudless sky and brilliant sun, and thes.s. Fortuna, in company with one or twoother steamers which had arrived in theearly morning, discharging their cargoes,floating on a sea like a sheet of glass. On several occasions later I often noticedhow gales of wind would arise in the twink-ling of an eye, when previously it was quitecalm, and as suddenly cease. Larnaka stands on the site of the ancientCitium, which is very probably the Chittimof Numbers, a Phoenician town. The oldtown of Larnaka proper is only a compara-tively modern one, having come into existenceafter the conquest of the island by the Turks;it is only old compared with the part by thesea-shore, called the Marina, which is thechief port and commercial centre of theisland, and which did not become importanttill piracy ceased to exist in these waters,thanks chiefly to Great Britain.
